Synopsis
After the death of his wife, a man takes to drink and loses his apartment. With nothing left for him in Moscow, he sets off with his eleven-year-old son to his sister’s home at Koktebel in the Crimea. They travel by train and on foot, earning their keep along the way with casual labour. The father is content to travel slowly and at the mercy of chance, however slow their movement may be, but his son longs to reach Koktebel, which he feels holds the key to a new life and emancipation. Frustrated by countless delays, the boy breaks away and continues the journey on his own in search of the sea he has longed to visit.
