Synopsis

Montreal, 1885: A train conductor traveling inbound from Chicago is admitted to a small hospital with symptoms resembling chickenpox. His disease quickly spreads, and as the number of infected multiplies, a sobering reality sets in: smallpox -- history’s silent killer -- has returned. Containment is possible, but Montreal is a city divided by language, class and religion. A complete societal collapse is imminent. Montreal, present day: A flight attendant is grounded with flu-like symptoms. Her ailments subside, but more severe cases soon crop up. The unbelievable is confirmed: smallpox -- a disease thought to have been eradicated -- has returned. As the death toll rises, racism and scapegoating divide the city. Montreal stands on the brink of collapse.
